Corten Steel Cladding

At Victoria Cladding and Decking, our team specializes in metal cladding. One of our favorite types of cladding to fabricate is with a metal that is known as Corten steel.

The word Corten is derived from the very two very distinct properties that this specific steel provides. “Cor” stands for the property of being corrosion resistant, while the “ten” represents the property of delivering tensile strength at the same time.

Corten cladding is a steel cladding that has a weathered look to it. This is a good part of the appeal for using it.

The process of creating the Corten finish involves adding alloying elements that are used to alter the chemical and mechanical properties of standard carbon steel.

Elements like copper and nickel will virtually stop rusting by affecting the rust film by congealing it on the surface.

What makes Corten cladding so special is that a sheet of Corten steel has a thickness of 6.35 mm (1/4 inch), but provides a high structural strength, making it a very popular choice as a lower maintenance, light weight alternative to other steel siding options.

Corten A cladding is a class of product that has been fabricated into a weather resistant steel covering for the façade of a building exterior, giving it a rustic look, that can deliver a stunning visual contrast with today’s design elements. It does this without any sacrifice to its strength or longevity.

There is a misconception about the cost of metal siding. Many people don’t even consider it, thinking that it is cost prohibitive.

The reality is that it is not what would be considered as an entry level finish, which makes it less of an option for some budgets. Corten cladding would fall under the mid-level prices point, but what it delivers far exceeds the cost.

The look is stunning as the metal ages, producing rich color reminiscent of a sunset along with a dramatic texture. The lifespan of this metal can stretch from decades to well over 100 years.

This is the result of the process of binding various alloying elements with the steel, creating a protective rust barrier on the surface of the steel. Once the Corten siding is exposed to the atmosphere, it will patina usually within a 6-month time span.

We do get asked about how to stop the steel from further surface rusting, and the answer is quite simple. If the surface has patinaed enough for your tastes, in order stop further corrosion, you can seal it with a polyurethane product, which also creates an even more durable finish. It’s easily applied and doesn’t require much prep time at all.

Another benefit of Corten cladding is that it can also be painted, if you want change out the appearance of a building. It does take some prep time and is labour intensive as the metal has to be cleaned properly, and readied to accept the paint.
